PRESENTATION OF LIPID ANTIGENS AND IMMUNE RESPONSE

D.V. Isakov

Antigen presentation is considered to be the key event in immune response that may result in specific activation of T cells. A variety of exogenous and endogenous biopolymer compounds which should be effectively detected and adequately responded to, caused a development of distinct pathways of antigen presentation. It has been shown that specific immune response may be elicited not only by protein antigens but also by lipid and glycolipid antigens. General concepts of presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens via CD1 molecules, and its role in immunity are discussed in this review. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2004. Vol. 3, N 4. P. 3-9.)

Keywords: antigen presentation, CD1 molecule, NKT cell, alpha-galactosylceramide, ganglioside GD3, mycolic acid, lipoarabinomannan.
