Interleukin 1 and interleukin 8 in chronic otitis media with tympanosclerosis

R.R. Miniakhmetova, A.S. Simbirtsev, I.A. Anikin, A.Yu. Kotov, E.V. Tyrnova

The aim of this study was to determine local and systemic levels of IL-1 and IL-8 in chronic otitis media (COM) with tympanosclerosis (COMT). Patients with COMT (69 patients), without tympanosclerotic changes (34 patients) and 15 practically health people were examined. The concentrations of IL-1 and IL-8 were measured in patient’s serum, middle ear mucous washouts, extracts of tympanosclerotic plaques and in the blood serum of healthy people. The quantity proportion of IL-1α and IL-1β in blood in COM are comparable with pathological changes in tympanum. IL-8 dominates in site of inflammation in COM in comparison with IL-1. The concentration of IL-8 in site of inflammation is the highest in combination of tympanosclerosis with cholesteatoma, caries, granulations and/or polyps and is the lowest in isolate tympanosclerosis and in COM without pathological changes in tympanum. The inflammation is not finished in COMT. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2010. Vol. 9, № 4. P. 35-40.)

Keywords: interleukin-1, interleukin-8, tympanosclerosis.
