Role of inflammation in pathogenesis of posttraumatic osteoarthritis

Ye.Yu. Udartsev

To study the cytokine status and to determine the role of its disorders in the development of inflammation in joint synovium, we conducted a ray, immunological and cytological examination of 27 patients with post-traumatic knee joint synovitis, 19 healthy subjects and 129 patients with 0-III stage post-traumatic gonarthrosis. It was found that tissue damage in the joint induces development of common immunopathological and local inflammatory reactions that lead to the occurrence of degenerative changes in joints that depend on the degree of inflammatory activity. It is shown that the appearance of inflammatory changes in synovitis and destructive processes in the articular cartilage in the initial (0–I) stages of the disease are associated with anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-1Ra, IL-10, and IFNγ. A direct correlation was shown between the activity of inflammatory changes and the intensity of the cartilage degradation. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2011. Vol. 10. № 3. P. 82–87.)

Keywords: post-traumatic gonarthrosis, pathogenesis, cytokines, inflammation.
