Changes in clinical parameters and cytokine status in children with chronic viral hepatitis B and C during antiviral therapy

N.A. Kaplina, E.A. Zhukova, S.V. Romanova, I.V. Mayanskaia, N.I. Tolkacheva, L.V. Korkotashvili, M.V. Groshovkina, I.A. Timchenko

The content of cytokines IL-1β, TNFα, IL-6, IL-10 in blood serum was studied in 22 children, aged between 5 and 17, with chronic viral hepatitis B and C during combined antiviral therapy including α-interferon per os and its inductor. Initial increase of anti-inflammatory cytokines alongside with normal parameters of IL-10 testifies to cytokine imbalance with prevalent influence of anti-inflammatory elements. During the treatment, a positive dynamics of clinical and biochemical indices as well as a decrease in mediators of immune response IL-1β, TNFα, IL-6 was observed by the end of 6-12 months therapy. Elevated values of IL-6 remained unchanged, which is indicative of insufficient inflammation suppression in liver cells. Delayed positive response indicates that a longer duration of the given course of antiviral treatment should be necessary. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2011. T. 10. № 3. P. 130–134.)

Keywords: chronic viral hepatitis B and C, cytokines, alpha-interferon, children.
