Role of cytokines in systemic and local inflammation in reactive arthritis

E.V. Kunder, M.V. Volkova

The aim of the study was definition of the role of pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the development of systemic and local inflammation in reactive arthritis (ReA). We compared the concentrations of TNFα, IL-1β, IFNγ, IL-8, IL-4 and IL-10 measured with ELISA in sera and synovial fluid in 120 ReA patients and 69 healthy volunteers. The serum levels of TNFα, IL-1β, IFNγ, IL-8 and IL-4 in controls were higher (p<0,05) than in patients with ReA. There were no differences (p>0,05) in serum concentrations of IL-10 between patients with ReA and healthy persons. The concentrations of IL-1β, IL-4 and IL-10 in synovial fluid of ReA patients were significantly higher (p<0,001) than in their sera. The detection of high concentrations of IL-1β, IL-4 and IL-10 in synovial fluid of patients with ReA confirms the role of these cytokines in the development of local inflammation in ReA.
