Morphology and immunology of systemic inflammatory response syndrome in ovariectomized Wistar rats

Morphological and functional state of immune system, liver, lung and the level of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines production in ovariectomized Wistar rats with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) has been studied. SIRS was modelled by intraperitoneal injection of E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS), 1.5 mg/kg, on the 52nd day after surgical ovariectomy. In the serum of ovariectomized rats with SIRS, the level of corticosterone, progesterone, endotoxin were higher than in rats with physiological levels of sex steroids and SIRS. In the lung of ovariectomized rats, on the 1st day after LPS injection, neutrophil number was higher in comparison with rats with physiological levels of sex steroids and SIRS. The dynamics of changes in the thymus didn’t differ between ovariectomized and control rats with SIRS. In the spleen of ovariectomized females with SIRS, germinative centers of lymph nodes were enlarged many times over the comparison group. After ovariectomy, SIRS was accompanied by increasing of IL-6 and IFNγ production and decreasing of IL-2, IL-4 and TNFα. The data obtained should be taken into account in the development of approaches to the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases in women with post-castration syndrome and physiological menopause.
