Gender-dependent changes in interleukin 1 system in women with essential arterial hypertension

O.A. Radaeva, A.S. Simbirsev

The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of serum cytokines (IL-1β, IL-1α and IL-1Ra) and hormones, and the clinical outcomes in women with essential arterial hypertension (EAH). Serum IL-1β, IL-1α and IL-1Ra levels were measured with ELISAin 300 patients (200 women and 100 men) with II stage ЕAН aged 51,5±2,8 years during 5-year period. It was shown that increased levels of pro-inflammatory IL-1 family cytokines were not counterbalanced by an appropriate up-regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines in blood of patients with EAH, thus causing their altered interrelations. Women in the 2 higher quartiles of IL-1α levels (≥17,2 pg/ml) had an increased risk of cardiovascularevents compared with patients in the 2 lower quartiles (relative risk: 7,6 confidence interval: 4 to 13,7). The data obtained allow us to suggest that high serum IL-1α levels are predictive for increased risk of cardiovascular events in women with ЕAН. IL-1α and IL-1β serum concentrations may serve as prognosis and therapy effectiveness criteria. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2014. Vol. 13. № 3. P. .)
