TGFB: PROATHEROGENIC OR ANTI-ATHEROGENIC CYTOKINE?

Citokines participate in regulation of a broad spectrum of vital physiological functions in cardiovascular system. They influence cell proliferation, differentiation and migration as well as metabolic activity and survival. Some of cytokines are reported to be active participants of cardiovascular diseases' pathogenesis. The recent reports, concerning the role of TGF-beta in atherogenesis are discussed in present review. Both pro- and antiatherogenic effects of TGFb as well as possibilities of its therapeutic use are analysed.
