SARS: SEVERE ACUTE RESPIRATORY SYNDROME. NEW VIRUS, NEW DISEASE

A review is devoted to a multi-country outbreak of a novel infectious disease (atypical pneumonia) called "severe acute respiratory syndrome" (SARS). Initial cases of SARS were registered in China in November, 2002, and since March 2003 the illness became an epidemic with rapid global spread. In April 2003, aetiological factor was identified. A new kind of coronavirus was identified as the cause of SARS. The paper reviews the epidemiological ways of SARS distribution, its incubation period, clinical characteristics, chest radiological features, laboratory findings and treatment regimes.
