Cytokines are regulatory peptides, produced by different cells. Up to 200 polypeptides are included in this group today. All of these substances are characterized by the same biochemical and functional properties, the most important of them are pleyotropism and interchangeability, lack of antigen-specificity, signal transduction by interaction with specific cell receptors, forming of cytokine network. In this connection, it's possible to consider cytokines to be a new, independent regulatory system. United functional classification is given in this article. Cytokines are divided into groups depending firstly on their biologic activity and also molecular structure and corresponding receptors. The advantages of this classification are due to taking into account both biologic and biochemical properties of cytokines. This is being proved nowadays when genome analysis and searching genes with similar structure being the way to discover new cytokines. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2004. Vol. 3, № 2. P. 16-22.)

Keywords: cytokines, chemokines, functions, classification.
