Flow cytometry evaluation of cytokine intracellular expression showed the decrease of intracellular IL-1b, IL-10, IL-12 synthesis by decidual macrophages in intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) pregnancy. IUGR was accompanied by significant decrease of IL-1b, IL-10 levels and increase of IL-12 concentration in extracts of decidual tissue. Decidual macrophages in IUGR pregnancy were characterized by diminished MHC antigens expression and elevation of CD11b+ pool of cells. Thus, inadequate activation of decidual macrophages associated with impairment of cytokine synthesis and antigen presenting function, was seen in IUGR pregnancy. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2006. Keywords: intrauterine growth retardation, cytokines, decidual macrophages.
