NADPH-OXIDASE OF NEUTROPHILS: ACTIVATION AND REGULATION

Neutrophil NADPH-oxidase is of great importance for phagocytic reactions being one of factors resisting to pathogens and inducing the inflammation. Production of superoxide anion and its derivatives takes place in non-mitochondrial activation of multicomponent protein complex having the ability to oxidize NADPH and to translocate the electrons from NADPH to molecular oxygen. This process (respiratory burst) is regulated by a number of receptor and non-receptor reactions that provide the conformational changes of NADPH-oxidase components making them to interact with one another. Oxidant reactions depend on stimulus and may be deactivated or primed, i.e. negatively or positively conditioned. This review covers the basic elements of neutrophil NADPH-oxidase and mechanisms of its regulation. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2007. Vol. 6, No. 3. P. 3-13.)
