Neutrophil granulocytes as a source of interleukin 1 family cytokines

I.N. Shvydchenko

There is a plenty of experimental data indicting the ability of neutrophil granulocytes to synthesize a wide spectrum of cytokines in response to various inflammatory stimuli. In the present review, the data on production by neutrophils of IL-1 family cytokines — IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-1Ra and IL-18 are considered. Distinctive features of cytokine-producing activity of neutrophil granulocytes are described. The literature data specify that neutrophils under certain conditions can be an important source of these cytokines, capable, in turn, to regulate activity, both neutrophil granulocytes and other cells. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2012. Vol. 11. № 1. P. 17–25.)

Keywords: neutrophil granulocytes, cytokines, interleukin 1 family.
