Cytokines in colon of C57Bl/6 male mice with acute and chronic dextran-induced colitis

The changes in the cytokine level in the colon wall of mature C57Bl/6 male mice with experimental acute (7 and 9 days) and chronic (28 day) colitis are described in the article. Colitis was induced by the consumption of 1% dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) for 5 days. On the days 7 and 9, an acute inflammation in the colon was observed: epithelial lining integrity compromise, extensive erosions of surface, crypt-abscesses; severe inflammatory infiltration in lamina propria and submucosa with neutrophils, lymphocytes and histiocytes; submucosal edema and lymphatic vessels distention. The levels of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-17 and IFNγ were significantly decreased compared to control. In chronic colitis, a colon mucosa remodeling was observed, crypts were expanded and filled with mucus, there was an increase in distance between crypts, there were also noted a severe inflammatory infiltration of mucus layer with plasma cells, histiocytes and sporadic neutrophils; and increase in the number of lymphoid nodules. The levels of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-17 and IFNγ were not different from the control values. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2015. Vol. 14. № 2. P. 70–76.)
