Regulation of bone remodeling by cytokines during immobilization stress combined with inflammation

S.B. Pavlov, A.V. Goncharova, M.V. Kumechko

The objective was to examine the levels of cytokines and their interactions in the mechanisms of bone remodeling regulation in rats subjected to immobilization stress combined with inflammation (ISI). Experimental study was conducted on two groups of white rats. ISI model was realized by animal immobilization followed by chronic inflammation of liver area. Serum levels of RANKL, osteoprotegerin, TGFβ1, IL-1Ra, adiponectin, visfatin and IL-17 were studied with ELISA. Levels of RANKL and TGFβ1 were reduced and levels of IL-1Ra and IL-17 were increased in rats with ISI. Differences were revealed in relationships between the cytokines in ISI group. The cytokine profile identified reflects the ending of the phase of active bone resorbtion induced by stress, and the beginning of the phase of compensatory reactions in bone tissue. The combined effect of ISI causes an imbalance between intercellular mediators regulating bone remodeling. (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2015. Vol. 14. № 2. P. 49–53 .)

Keywords: cytokines, bone tissue, remodeling, regulation.
