Concentrations of IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 and TNFα in the serum of patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis

S.V. Smirnova, M.V. Smolnikova, A.A. Barilo

The purpose of the study was to determine the serum concentrations of IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 and TNFα of patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and psoriasis (PS) and to identify markers of disease progression.

Materials and methods. The study included patients with progressive psoriasis vulgaris (n = 97). We examined 3 groups: 1) patients with PS (n = 49); 2) patients with PsA (n = 48); 3) healthy blood donors (n = 94). Serum concentrations of cytokines (IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, TNFα) were determined by ELISA. Results. Level of IL-4 was significantly higher in PsA patients serum in comparison with the control group. Concentrations of IL-6 in sera significantly increased in both groups of patients in comparison with control. There was a statistically significant decrease in IL-10 in the sera of PS patients in comparison with control. The concentration of TNFα in serum was significantly higher in the group of patients with PsA in comparison with PS patients and control. Conclusions. We have identified markers of psoriasis: the deviation of cytokine profile towards Th1 type (decreased level of IL-10). Markers for the psoriatic arthritis formation are activation of Th1 and Th2 immune response (the increased level of the serum concentration of IL-4 and TNFα). (Cytokines and Inflammation. 2015.
